The general (sometimes drunk, possibly frequently incoherent) ramblings of a girl finding her way.

27 September
Checked out the adorable new K Rd cafe Mister Morning, run by (so I read in Metro) the people that run Coco's Cantina.
There are delicious pastries on the counter:
The decor is kitch and cute:
Self service sugar, stirrers and lids:
And coffees served to the correct levels:There was lots of delicious food on the menu, and the girl at the counter seemed to be bagging hearty looking sandwiches. Unfortunately the coffee fell a little flat for me, but I will go back and have breakfast or lunch there soon. Worth a visit just for the delightful staff and atmosphere.
Open Monday to Friday, 7am to 3pm.

World Press Photo 2011
World Press Photo is on again, however this year I don't feel as though it has been overly publicized.
Running from 15th Sept to 9th October in The Nathan Club, 40 Customs Street East, the photos are exactly what you hope for. Thought provoking, challenging, shocking.
Please don't go with the thought that all of the photos will be kittens and puppies, these photos capture some amazing worldwide events including Haiti, floods, and volcanic eruptions.
Or these two ladies in Ireland - the series which this photo is from took me right back to My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. Pretty amazing - especially the little ginger haired girl.Only $5 and for a limited time only, I do recommend a visit. I popped down in my lunch break today and had plenty of time and space to read all of the captions.
As a heads up for people who have been in previous years - I do feel as though the venue was a bit of a let down. There was conflicting music and a lot of conversation from the other half of the space which was curtained off. Don't expect the calm and focus which was the top floor of Smith & Caugheys.
More info on World Press Photo is here.

15 September Meadowlark Preview
How insanely beautiful is this ring. So so so much swoon.
Meadowlark had a preview night at Walker & Hall on Queen St tonight. I
remember buying my first Meadowlark piece from Good as Gold in
Wellington just after I made the move from suit to media. I wear that
fangs ring on a weekly basis.
I still love Meadowlark jewelry. I almost feel like it's grown up with
me. Their earrings are more dear to me than my Karen Walkers (which I
hold pretty dear).
So many pieces I love, but this ring was the standout for this new
collection. Just divine.
I wonder if they do commission pieces...

Okay, so this was actually the 11th September, but they're the All

Venus is...
Because I am a lucky spoilt lady, this evening I went and saw Venus Is... at the new Q Theatre on Queen St. Sitting next to Auckland Town Hall (and conveniently located moments from Tanuki's Cave) I am very impressed with Q Theatre. While the bar service was slow and the staff weren't paying a huge amount of attention, the wine selection was adequate and it was possible to get a glass of wine (which wasn't terrible) for under $10. The staff thing is just a matter time. Once they get rolling I'm sure they'll be well onto it.
The venue itself is fabulous. I only went into The Loft, but they have really done an amazing job of the space. A number of theatres with a bar and cafe on the ground floor. Also, really nice touches in the bathrooms, flattering lighting and hooks for your bags for when you're washing your hands. Brillant.
Enough about the venue, let me tell you about the show. Venus Is... (in it's own words) physical interpretation of erotic literature.
I think it a perfect description of what I saw tonight. Shakespeare, Nina Simone, Emily Dickinson, Archillachos, Tuppy Jones and James Joyce to name a few, their words spoken and acted out to tell a story about an older couple's memory journey of times past which have shaped their relationship.
There are sexual themes (my personal favourite was the Tuppy Owens - "How to turn a hand-job into a screw") and nudity, but there was so much more. The strength and grace of the performers was outstanding. I have never seen a man of such stature on the silks before. So impressive. The women were fearless with their bodies, both in their exposure and how they were thrown around. The audience participation was a little confronting but also amusing, and I think my favourite part was the fabulous singer who linked so many scenes and looks so picturesque sitting on the piano as it was played.
There is a short clip (not all of which I saw tonight) below which I would recommend you check out, and more to the point, go and see this amazing show. It is incredibly cheap for the calibre of the performers and a fantastic night out. If you do go, seat yourself so that you can see the sand... I feel as though I missed some of the show by not being able to see this.

Whanganui Birthday Weekend
Birthday weekend in Whanganui.
Sun, Durie Hill Tower, Markets, Molly, Farm Life.
Total bliss. Didn't want to come back to reality.
Matakana Adventure
Thanks to his parents fabulous generosity and brilliant birthday present, G and I took a little mission up to Matakana to wander the markets before splurging on an amazing meal at Ascention Wines.
Other than dropping my iPhone and smashing the screen (on which I completely blame that stupid toll road), it was the most blissful, delicious and relaxing day. So glad and lucky G decided to share it with me!
